Damn. I want to like Mark Maske. He knows that Chad Pennington can play in the clutch, and rebounded well, along with the rest of the Jets in week two, after having a....um....trying season opener.
But in today's paper he dogs my team by picking them to be the butt end of his "upset of the week" at the hands of Jacksonville Jaguars. His reasoning? Some half-assed injury commentary. Follow the link to see what I mean, I don't want to repeat it here. Suffice it to say, he neglected to mention that Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich, who isn't particularly mobile to begin with, injured his groin while getting pounded by the Colts last weekend. And the game's in New York.
Maske went 7-9 last week with his picks. This week, his whole round-up seems dubious to me, even on the easy games. It ranges from heavy-handed and obvious--"The NFC West deserves minor-league status."--to not-even-trying--"The Vikings have to win sometime, don't they?" For good measure, I need to throw this hot tip into the mix--"Panthers might have their act together, if Jake Delhomme can avoid the big mistakes." Yeah, they "might have their act together" one week after mugging the New England Patriots.
Also, New England fans beware: Maske's picking the Pats over the Steelers.
